Guy Like Me

every song I hear is about the down and out and dispossessed
nobody is singing any songs about a guy like me
little gray around the temples more than a little thick around the middle
looking in from the outside I got it made by all accounts

Heard there’s nothing more than the eye can see, least nothing so far anyhow

trained up in the finest warehouse tax money can buy
learned fast to keep my head down and my mouth closed tight
played a good guy and grinned a lot never let anyone down
but always worried late at night that something just didn’t feel right

wish I was fed up with choking it all down
sick of waltzing to a song I can’t hear
the parade is a train of ghosts and lies...
want to feel me
for just one breath

I do the dance with much aplomb and nonchalant elan
not a single step means a damn thing to me
image don’t equal innards, I think it but don’t know what it means
i’d say it was bugging me but I don’t even feel that much.

Heard there’s nothing more than the eye can see, least nothing so far anyhow

when my boy calls hurting I want to tell him to run,
tell him to chuck it all and feel something I’ll never feel
but I lie, like they did to me and tell him to suck it up.

every song I hear is about the down and out and dispossessed
nobody is singing any songs about a guy like me

Cosmic Labor

when dreams die the wonder begins
the sky falls and I’ll smile
not much have I got to offer
but I’ll linger for a little while.

poesy and pretty things don’t mean much
when your back is broken on the side of the road
under far too heavy a load

what’s a man supposed to do?
if he can’t find his niche and kick the blues
but he still wants to set the world on fire

Summer

All that summer long we sat on my back porch until it was dawn
we smoked our Marlboro lights and talked of what was wrong and right

you never knew how you shined in my eyes
or how my heart ached when you’d sigh

you drove around with wild boys in hot rod cars
in the July sun you looked like movie stars
I sat by the pool and I tried to be cool
or splashedin the water being your fool

but your mama had you home by ten and then
you’d sit with me on my porch again

you were the one that we all dreamed about
stopping the world with your unknowing pout
I was the one who listened to your fears
who knew beauty brought its own kind of tears

So many words in my head
visions of you in my arms
dreaming of ways to be more in your eyes

all I wanted to say was wrong
all I could think of to say was wrong
all I wanted to say...

If anything was different if it had been more than longing
it wouldn’t have been magic it’d of turned out all wrong
as it stands now there’s this beautiful picture
your smile and your laugh couldn’t be any clearer

You’ll never know how you shined in my eyes
or how my heart ached when you sighed...

Bimbos & Bombs

My old man said while watching planes land
some folks are down right rotten
might makes right and keep your shit wired tight
and always keep one in the chamber

looking around at this daily nightmare
it’d be nice to understand
the pillars upon which this great country stands
what motivates the man with the plan

It’s bimbos and bombs
crotch shots and rockets
nubile flesh and carnage piled high
bimbos and bombs
crotch shots and rockets
make the world go round

you got bikini clad babies and old craggy killers
sweet young things and crone eyed warriors
these are the things that keep commerce flowin
these are the things that get us off every time

What good is living with lies piled high
what good is living without dying?
we all need something to fix us up right
and we know what will do it every time

it’s bimbos and bombs
crotch shots and rockets
nubile flesh and carnage piled high
bimbos and bombs
crotch shots and rockets
make the worldgo round

Prayer For The Day

Heading out the door this morning
afraid to be a minute late
the very breath ruled by clocks and schedules
pressure and strife the only constants to know

the kids see mom and dad ten minutes in the day
and dad just bought a faster car
portfolio is prospering and the business steady growing
junior is sure lucky they work that hard

is this all the good lord had intended
is hustling for a buck the true glory of creation
how did it get this far and who can ever fix it?
it’s all the children want to know.

This is my prayer for the day

but this too will fade and pass
one day they’ll dig wall street out of the dirt
love and laughter will bloom
faith and strength will get us through

Shaman

your daddy don’t know where we are
sometimes I’m not so sure
air is filled with light and sound
strange smell in the air
do you hear the chants in the trees?
yes I do my dear
The Man on the rock in feathers and furs
appears and disappears
least we’re out here… safe in Mama’s arms

water flows over moss and rock
washes over our skin
your daddy says what we do here’s a sin
we’re washed clean again and again
It’s like a dream we weave
our bodies entwined
How long have man and woman come to this place
shared in this ancient embrace
least we’re out here…safe in mama’s arms

blazing Georgia sky above us
the war is past and done
In this granite spring we do our thing
all night long
It’s like a dream we weave
our bodies entwined
how long have man and woman come to this place
shared in this ancient embrace

King In A Cage

made a cage out of quirks and desires
lined it with mirrors and pretty things
dreamed a nightmare of luxurious pain
wrapped it up in a bow

every angle that I beheld
each one a well crafted lie
inside the palace the king he dies
from the works of his own hand

lulled into trance
by faces in the water
captivated by an imagined grace

even dreams are owned by the man behind the curtain
behind him is me and you.

Linda

rolling down the road
wondering what everhappened to Linda
married to a drunken painter
who drove a black and gold oldsmobile 442
the Painter he beat her and he loved her savagely
crushing her daily with words and paint splotched fists

her beauty was like the sun
you wanted to stare but you knew you’d go blind
grace and motion in innocent glide
a force of nature unrecognized

I dreamed she left him
and found herself a good man
who cherished her treasure
and left her in peace

she found her truth now
and smiles everyday
see her in her garden
when I’m passing along my way

Mary

Hey Mary, what’s going on
I just called to see what’s going on
you broke my heart like in a song
left me crying on your front lawn
you wouldn’t even talk to me out your window
and you know how I love a drama, my Juliette

don’t hang up on me now darling
it took all my nerve just to call you...

you say you left me ’cause I had no future
you say you left me ’cause I had no gumption
honey I can climb any mountain for you
swim a river or hang on your cross

your spirit moves me it never leaves me
I know you hate me but give me a chance please, please...
you’re right I need to go
late at night my head ain’t on tight

the wife and kids are asleep in the next room
I’ve got a big meeting in the morning
I just needed to hear your voice
and remember that long gone fall sweater day...

ok I’m hanging up now darling
thanks so much for letting me call you
I just called to see what’s going on

Something’s Coming

somethings coming don’t know what it is
mean scary ancient and hard
hoary old prophets roam the street begging for dimes
star eyed Buddhas drunk underthe overpass

children kept in cages
taught to salivate at the bell
fair haired maids undressed
in the town square

strong men crippled
by a taste for tender flesh
everything’s something else
nothing by it’s right name

Take the ones you love
tuck them into your dreams
times are tough and night’s falling fast
you gotta make love and do it fast
gotta create love and make it last

when the trees are weeping tears
and mouths are filled with lies
what will be and what has been
are the same damn thing
eat drink and be merry
see the coming day
might look a little scary
but everything’s alright
